JULY WORKSHOP!!!

AfroCuban Roots, Rhythms and Rituals: Exploring the African Origins of Salsa

Thursdays, 6 to 7:30PM

Begins July 2nd

This workshop will introduce the fundamentals of Afro-Cuban movement, including Yoruba-based dance (Orisha), Rumba and Son, and will culminate with an Afro-Cuban based Salsa class. Each class will cover the basic historical, social, and cultural aspects of the specific dance forms, the fundamentals of the movement, and the relevance to contemporary salsa styles. This workshop is open level, and is particularly appropriate for students looking to understand and experience the relationships among the various African-based popular and folkloric dances in Cuba. The first class on July 2nd - Fundamentals of Afro-Cuban movement - will serve as a preparation for the remainder of the workshop. Focusing on the core of each dance form, simplicity and easeful movement will be emphasized.

Cuban Salsa ("Casino")/Rueda de Casino is a dynamic, high energy social dance alive and thriving in Cuba, New York, and across the globe. In this 8-Week introductory workshop students will learn the fundamentals of Afro-Cuban movement, rhythm, partnering technique and the basic steps. You don't need a partner and no experience is necessary!

The 8-week beginner workshop is an introduction to the fundamentals of Cuban salsa and Rueda de Casino, including Afro-Cuban movement, rhythm, basic steps, partnering technique, and calls for Rueda de Casino. Students will develop increased body awareness and personal confidence as dancers, in addition to learning how to lead and follow. A spirit-lifting dance experience in the heart of downtown brooklyn!

INT/ADVANCED AFRO-CUBAN SALSA AND RUEDA DE CASINO
Wednesdays, 7:30 to 9:00PM

Location: Flamenco Latino Manhattan
$20 per class

This fast paced class covers a spectrum of Cuban popular and folkloric dance from Son to Rumba to Rueda de Casino, and explores how these various forms and rhythms converse and converge in contemporary Cuban salsa. Class begins with a comprehensive warm-up to release tension from the body and transition from the work day to the dance class. After practicing the basic salsa steps, students learn challenging dance phrases that combine intricate footwork with dynamic rhythmic variation. Class concludes with practice of advanced turn patterns and Rueda de Casino. This class is appropriate for students with a solid foundation in Cuban salsa fundamentals who are interested in delving deeper into the creative possibilities of the form.
