NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2009

AFRO-CUBAN DANCE: ORISHAS AND RUMBA
Wednesdays, 6:00 to 7:15PM
Starts November 18th
Location: Manhattan

This class will delve deeply into the rhythmic and expressive nuances of the Yoruba-based dances for the Orishas and traditional Cuban Rumba. We will learn to follow the “conversation” in the bata – the three drums playing specific rhythms for each Orisha – and practice embodying the energetic and expressive qualities called for in each distinct dance. We will learn to dance to the three rhythms of the Rumba complex – Yambu, Guaguanco, and Columbia – and explore the subtleties of each form.

This class is appropriate for any student who wants to explore the depth and richness of Afro-Cuban dance.

ADVANCED CUBAN POPULAR DANCE: PERFORMANCE WORKSHOP
Wednesdays, 7:15 to 8:30PM
Starts November 18th

The choreography will draw on a range of Cuban popular and folkloric dance, including Son, Casino ("a tiempo" and "contra-tiempo"), Rumba, Afro-Cuban Folklore, and Rueda de Casino. The performance will take place on December 21st at our holiday party in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. Intermediate dancers welcome with permission of instructor.

We will listen and dance to a variety of Salsa – from elegant son to rhythmically dense timba – and practice responding to the “call” of the music, mirroring the simplicity or complexity of the music with our movements and turn patterns. We will practice listening and responding to the musicians, so that our dance can be a dialogue with our partners and the band.
